About Me

My name is Alexander Haffer and I live in a small town in Hesse, Germany. For all my life I've been interested in technology and almost everything that has to do with it. When I was young, a computer was a privilege, not to mention a (cell) phone. I got my first phone for my enrolment in primary school. 21 keys. A monochrome display. It felt like the battery would last for 70 years. Bluetooth, infrared and an optional antenna. The good old Nokia 6310i. I didn't really need it, I just had it in case my parents needed to contact me or vice versa. And there wasn't much else you could do with it. Phoning, sending SMS and playing some Snake here and there. Every now and then I accidentally clicked on the "browser", which always ended in panic, because it was very expensive. To this day I really don't know, whether it actually was expensive, or if my parents just wanted to keep me away from the internet. I'm guessing the first one, since everyone freaked out when they started the browser on their phone. If it was the latter one, it didn't work. After primary school, I bought my brother's old Windows XP laptop and from that day I was under the spell of technology and the internet. ICQ, SchülerVZ (R.I.P.), YouTube, Steam, later Twitter and Minecraft.. Oh boy. In comparison to other games it was simple, but also extremely vast. Randomly generated maps, that could be explored and redesigned however you like it. A wonder that I ever left my room again. Shortly after that I discovered webdesign for me. At the beginning, I built simple html-sites in table design, but after a while I learned CSS, PHP and JavaScript and I had way more options to design a site now. In case of my own site, this led to me restructuring the whole thing every two to four months. Not the best practice for search engines, but that was definitely not my goal. Rather, I use the site to refresh my knowledge and to learn something new here and there. Besides webdesign, I'm also interested in graphics design, software development and games, although right now I'm less involved with these than I'd like to be. I play games mostly on my computer and occasionally on the Switch or my phone. I don't own a PlayStation or Xbox of the current generation, simply because I wouldn't use it enough. Most of the games are available on pc as well, so it's not worth the investment. When choosing a game to play, I'm pretty much open for everything. If I enjoy it, I'll play it. However, the past has shown, that I'm not really into shooters and battle royale games. Also, I must admit that I tend to lose interest in a game, even if I liked it the day before. Minecraft and Factorio are two good examples for this. I always rediscover one of them and then I'd like to play it 24/7. This doesn't change for a few days, but then I just don't feel like I want to play it anymore. Maybe it's the tremendous amount of available games, which grows even further with every passing year. I play a game and a few weeks later another game is released, which I'd like to play even more. On the other hand, I could lose interest in a game, because it has repetitive tasks ("A settlement needs your help!™") that aren't fun after a while. For example, I played Factorio for over 200 hours, but I've never seen the end. I spent over 120 hours in Skyrim and I didn't even finish half of the main quest. But maybe you also want to know something about me as a person. I think, my life went down pretty normal. Born, went to kindergarten and primary school, later to a grammar school and after my graduation 2017 I was a bit lost. Of course I wanted to study, because why else would I need that graduation? So I started to study computer science in Marburg. After the first semester, I didn't really like the idea of studying anymore. A lot of theoretical knowledge, almost no practical application. And every time we did use the knowledge for an application, it wasn't something that made sense. During the second semester, I really knew, that studying wasn't for me. At that time, however, it was too late to apply for an apprenticeship at most companies, so I started a voluntary social year (in German: "Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr" or short "FSJ"). The FSJ at the Zentrum für junge Körperbehinderte (in English: "centre for young physically handicapped people") was a new experience. No code, no exams, no overcrowded classrooms or lecture halls, instead I earned money and had alternation. Amazon was happy about the money, my bank wasn't. At first, I was very sceptical about whether it'd be fun to work there, or not. I had no experience with physically handicapped people until then. How do I deal with it? What do I have to consider? But these questions quickly vanished. My colleagues made me a part of the team from the first day on and they were always friendly. Especially the residents were always happy when I was there. I was actually sad when the year was over, which is definitely not self-evident when it comes to professional life. Of course I applied for an apprenticeship at various companies during my FSJ. A few in the closer area, others far away. Now my apprenticeship at Christmann & Pfeifer starts, where I already completed a school internship back in 2015. I really like the company and the proximity to my place of residence allows me to walk to work or ride a bicycle, which on the one hand protects the environment and on the other hand saves me a lot of fuel costs. Also I already know a few people, which will probably make the start a little bit easier.

Languages

Deutsch (German)

Native German is my native language. I lived in Germany my whole life and therefore I'm fluent in reading, writing and speaking German.

English (English)

CEFR¹ C1 (Effective operational proficiency) EF SET English Certificate 68/100 (C1 Advanced) I learned English in school from third grade on and over time I got more and more involved in it. By now I watch all movies and series in English, as long as they're available and I also play most games in English.

Français (French)

CEFR¹ A2 (Elementary) I learned French in school from sixth to ninth grade and also participated in an exchange. Although French is a very beautiful language, I didn't continue to study it and so I forgot most of it again.
